How to Connect to a Windows VPS

Once your Windows VPS is provisioned and you have received your setup instructions by email, you can connect to it using Remote Desktop Connection (RDP). This is the standard and most convenient way to manage a Windows VPS. This guide walks you through the process.

What You Need

Before you start, make sure you have the following information from your VPS setup email:

  • Server IP address — the public IP of your VPS.
  • Username — typically Administrator or a custom admin account.
  • Password — or a secure credential delivery method.
  • RDP port — usually 3389, unless a custom port is specified.

Connecting from Windows

Windows includes Remote Desktop Connection built in. Here is how to use it:

  1. Press the Windows key and type Remote Desktop Connection, then open the app.
  2. In the Computer field, enter your VPS IP address (e.g., 203.0.113.10).
  3. If a custom RDP port is used, enter it as IP:port (e.g., 203.0.113.10:3390).
  4. Click Connect.
  5. When prompted, enter your username and password.
  6. Accept the certificate warning if you see one (this is normal for a new server).

You should now see the Windows desktop of your VPS. You can manage the server just like a local Windows machine.

Connecting from macOS

macOS includes a built-in Microsoft Remote Desktop client. Here is how to use it:

  1. Open Microsoft Remote Desktop (pre-installed on macOS).
  2. Click + Add PC (or Add in newer versions).
  3. Enter your VPS IP address in the PC name field.
  4. If a custom port is used, enter it in the Port field.
  5. Click Save, then double-click the new entry to connect.
  6. Enter your username and password when prompted.

Connecting from Linux

Linux does not include a native RDP client, but several options are available:

  • Remmina — a popular open-source remote desktop client for Linux. Install it with sudo apt install remmina (Debian/Ubuntu) or sudo dnf install remmina (Fedora).
  • xrdp — a command-line RDP client. Install with sudo apt install xrdp.

Configure the client with your VPS IP, port, username, and password, then connect.

Connecting from Mobile

Both iOS and Android have Remote Desktop apps that allow you to connect to your Windows VPS from a phone or tablet:

  • iOS: Microsoft Remote Desktop (free from the App Store).
  • Android: Microsoft Remote Desktop (free from the Google Play Store).

Enter your VPS IP, port, username, and password to connect. This is useful for quick checks or emergency access when you are away from your desktop.

Basic Tasks After Connecting

Once you are connected to your Windows VPS, here are some common tasks:

  • Open Server Manager — the main hub for managing your server. It is usually open by default.
  • Install IIS — if you need a web server, add the IIS role through Server Manager.
  • Install SQL Server — if your application requires a database, install SQL Server from the Microsoft website.
  • Configure Windows Firewall — ensure that the ports your application needs are open.
  • Run Windows Update — keep your system up to date with the latest security patches.

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

  • Connection timed out: Check that the IP address is correct and that your VPS is running. Verify that the RDP port (3389 or custom) is open in the firewall.
  • Authentication error: Double-check the username and password. Make sure the account has permission to log in remotely.
  • Certificate warning: This is normal for a new server. You can choose to always trust the certificate to avoid seeing the warning each time.
  • Blank screen after connecting: This can happen if the display driver is not configured correctly. Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the security screen, then log in again.

Security Tips

  • Use a strong password for your admin account.
  • Consider changing the default RDP port (3389) to a custom port to reduce automated attacks.
  • Enable Windows Firewall and only allow RDP from trusted IP addresses if possible.
  • Keep Windows Server up to date with security patches.
  • Consider using Network Level Authentication (NLA) for an extra layer of security.

Next Steps

Once you are connected, you can start setting up your environment. Install your web server, database, and application. If you need help with setup, contact us and we will be happy to assist.
